Sunday was a tougher day for the BGR team out on track, but everyone worked hard to keep everything going in the right direction. After making a switch to new front tires for the morning practice session, I struggled a lot with the handling of the car (a bad understeer). I pulled in early in the session just so I would not wear out a fresh set which could be useful for later in the day. For qualifying, we put back on the old tires and I managed to set a lap of 1:30.4 on my second hot lap, which put me 3rd on the grid for the CanAm Cup. My fastest lap was only on my second lap due to a weld which broke on my shifter linkage right as I crossed the start finish line. This put the car in 3rd gear with the shifter right in my lap for the rest of the lap as I crawled back into the pits. That ended my session, so it was a bit tough to say how well my car was set up. I'm sure there was more time out there, but after only a few laps, it's tough to say how well the car would've handled in the long run.
For the race we put the fresher set of tires on the car in hopes of hitting a sweet spot in the setup and challenging Shane Jantzi for the win of the 5th annual CanAm Cup (which he had won all 4 previously). As the race commenced I slid in behind my teammate Mikhail Goikhberg and Shane Jantzi, as we all battled for positions. Unfortunately for my teammate Mikhail, his driveshaft broke, which ended his day early. This moved me up into 2nd position, which I held for the remainder of the race. In the second half of the race I really struggled to get a positive feel for my car as the setup was not where I wanted it to be, which made the car very difficult to drive. However, it was great to come across the line in 2nd place and get another positive result at Mosport! Results wise, this was my best weekend ever and it feels good to have that kind of a weekend after battling for funding for so long.
Right after the race on Sunday, I drove back to Toronto airport and caught a 10:45PM flight back to Edmonton. The plane landed at 12:30AM in Edmonton (2:30AM on Toronto time), and I got home right at 2AM Monday morning, which was 4AM Toronto time. This was after being up at 6:30AM Sunday morning to head to the racetrack as well!
Just to add to it, I had a 3 hour English Diploma that is worth 50% of my entire year's grade 12 mark at 9AM to 12PM. To say the least I was tired, but hopefully I managed to pull some strong writing out for those few hours.
After that, I was lucky enough to sit down with a few people in the Edmonton business community surrounding the Edmonton Indy event, and a special guest, Paul Tracy. It was awesome to meet one of my childhood heroes for a few hours!
So overall, a really exciting week for me! To add to this, the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup (I've been routing for them ever since the Oilers lost Hemsky and fell into the dungeons of the NHL), and I was the captain of my high school soccer team where we won the city championship last week as well!
Now I'm going to keep working on my racing program so that I can get in the Edmonton and Toronto Indy events in a support category. That's the plan for now, and hopefully we will be able to put something big together very shortly!
Oh yeah, and I have to study for the rest of my 4 final diploma exams as well. Busy times!
